Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.

THE ROAD TRIPS
Munising Michigan. From mid Michigan it takes a good 6 hours of driving (close to the speed limit) to get there. It is one of my go to places because of Lake Superior and I am familiar with it. It is also the place to go when you want to go to the west end of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. This is where the sandstone cliffs are and the tours that will guide you out there. I had purchased a Paddlers Choice package in the winter that also included a hotel stay at the Days Inn. We were put in a tandum Kayak and set out to sea from Miners Beach. It took a little bit of paddling for us to get to the sandstone cliffs but once we got out there it took my breath away. I became so emotional that I had a few tears. It was that beautiful. We kayaked a ways up the shoreline and stopped at Mosquito Beach where we had our lunch that we brung with us. We wandered around and then sat and watched the lake and chatted with our guide. The whole trip is about 6 hours and by hour 5 I was ready to be done with the paddling. On our way back to Miners Beach the wind and waves had picked up quite a bit and I actually had to help Ramon get the kayak back in. It was an amazing adventure. Seems like everytime I go to Munising I have to do the Sunset cruise. It takes you out to the cliffs and the way the "golden hour" sun reflects off them and the lake is magical. The sunset cruise is a must.

The weekend of June 20th brought us to Charlevoix. We were there for Ramon's 2nd Charlevoix Marathon on June 21st. I myself did the 5k, mostly to keep myself busy for some of the 3 1/2 hours of Ramon's race. Again there were beautiful things to look at, mostly houses. That evening we went out on another ship, the Keweenaw Star. It travels around Lake Charlevoix and out into Lake Michigan. We took the sunset cruise but there wasn't too much color because of the misty gloomy day. But we had fun hearing the captain talk about the history of the Charlevoix area. The Keweenaw Star has cruises all through the day. If you are in the Charlevoix area I highly recommend the sunset cruise. June 27th is the 2015 Charlevoix Marathon. It is a very nice course according to Ramon. They also have a half marathon, 10k and a 5k.
May 16th was the Mackinaw Kite Festival in Grand Haven. We try to go every year and we stay the weekend dispite the chilly air. This years event had some perfect winds and perfect sunsets. Although the camping was a little too cold for the pop-up camper, we managed though and it was great memories for us who toughed it out. The little ones stayed in a hotel up in town. The kite fest has become a Hernandez Family tradition and we look forward to going every year. Saturday May 23rd, Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City. We camped at Traverse City State Park in our little pop-up camper. Another weekend of beautiful Michigan sunsets on the Grand Traverse Bay. Ramon ran the marathon and I the 10k. He loved the beautiful views running out to the end of Old Mission Penisula and I enjoyed the views while I ran and mostly walked my 10k. I get distracted very easily and as soon as I caught eye of the water I was pretty much done. Later in the evening we treated ourselves to a cruise on the Manitou Tall Ship. It has been on my bucket list for a few years and decided to go for it this year. Unfortunately there was absolutely no wind at all but it was still amazing to be on this grand ship just floating around. Ramon got to help pull up the sails and they had a packed meal and beverages on board. The crew was very friendly and talked to every passenger on the ship. I highly recommend it and next year when my husband runs the Bayshore Marathon again, I hope there will be a little more wind so that we can get the full effect of sailing in the Bay. May 23, 2015 is the Bayshore Marathon. Registration opens December 1st at 9am. They also have a half marathon and a 10k. The half marathon sells out very fast so be ready when it opens for your chance to register.
